Getting personal: what inspires us to give

 When I was a kid, my parents tried to teach me the importance of giving by sponsoring underprivileged children in third world countries.  The sponsorship program, Compassion International, emphasized an active engagement in each child’s life by establishing a firsthand correspondence between donor and child. It was this program which showed me that philanthropic giving was more than a financial obligation.

Water wanted

During a sweltering summer in Varanasi, India, I considered going for a swim.  At three o’ clock in the afternoon, the heat in our cramped and muggy guest house had grown almost unbearable.  From the window, I could see the Ganges River stretching out in cool, inviting rivulets.  Women clad in vibrant saris washed clothing along the banks while children splashed in the shallows.
